Can Nexus One slay smartphone dragon?

The big speculation about the debut of Google’s “Nexus One” smartphone was its ability to challenge the huge popularity of Apple’s iPhone.

But reviews of the new Android-based phone, while largely positive, seem to conclude that the Nexus One is no “iPhone killer.”

Take for example the review by Engadget.com Editor-in-Chief Joshua Topolsky who comments that the Nexus One is “not really” an “iPhone eviscerator.” The smartphone built by HTC Corp. “is not really very different than the [Motorola] Droid in any substantial way,” says Topolsky.

Most reviewers agree that to knock the iPhone off its pedestal, the Nexus One would need to be a game changing device, one that offered something new and different from what’s already available.

According to Topolsky’s review, the Nexus One is “not some paradigmatic shift for Android.”

Harry McCracken over at PC World agrees. His review of the Nexus One comes to a similar conclusion.

Says McCracken: “Everything that’s better about it is evolutionary, not revolutionary.”
