Google: Is it becoming an IT friend or foe?

New upgrades to Google’s popular suite of hosted apps may not get an enthusiastic welcome from IT.

The new, free suite – called Google Apps Team Edition – was officially released back in February. The rub: The new suite cuts IT out of implementation.

So far, over half a million small businesses have signed on to Google Apps’ previous versions – Standard, Education, Partner and Premier. These versions require IT implementation so their services can be linked to the organization’s Web domain.

The new Team Edition skips that.

It lets workgroups set up Google Apps using only a valid e-mail address from their organization. This means a group of individuals within your company can ignore IT’s input and just start using Google Apps.

The IT headache: Work-related data is stored outside the company’s firewall in Google data centers.
