Is Win7 off on the wrong foot?

Looks like it’s deja vu all over again for Microsoft and its latest operating system, Windows 7. A number of users upgrading to the new OS are reporting that debilitating “endless reboot” loop that frustrated Vista and XP users more than a year ago.
A Microsoft support forum’s been inundated with complaints from folks trying to upgrade to Win 7. The problem being reported:
“When attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the upgrade attempt may fail with the message ‘This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it.’ However, the next reboot of the machine will launch the upgrade process again only to fail with the same message.”
The problems users were reporting didn’t seem to be confined to one particular scenario — other than trying to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.
Some folks having the problem had purchased a Windows 7 upgrade electronically from Microsoft’s online store, while others downloaded the upgrade from Digital River, the Minneapolis-based company that distributes Microsoft’s $29.99 upgrade offer to college students.
Still others suffering the problem bought their copy of the new operating system at a retail store.
A similar problem affected Vista users back in February, 2008, when they were prepping their systems to install the Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). XP users were also afflicted a few months later when they tried to install an upgrade to SP3.
The difficulty bodes ill for the much-anticipated Windows 7, which was enjoying a somewhat positive reception, primarily because it wasn’t Vista. This glitch may prompt flashbacks for many Microsoft users contemplating an upgrade and wary of past incidents.

What professional would want to upgrade an OS as opposed to doing a clean install?

I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista last night without a hitch. So far, so good.
Cost is one reason why I upgraded rather than performed a clean install; plus, with a clean install, all programs have to be reloaded and data restored. It’s very labor intensive.
Just to go on the record — I loathed Vista. I have two other computers with XP, and have no plans to upgrade them at the moment. From what I understand, it is difficult to upgrade from XP, and it involves pretty much a clean install. My XP ain’t broke, so I don’t need to fix it.

I have to agree with Pam.
I too upgraded but over a month ago (MAPS program) and had no issues at all once I found the right video driver.
The in place upgrade over Vista Business did take a very long time to complete but the end result is a system far more stable, much quicker to boot & shut down but most of the commands and tools I used in XP are gone, moved or have been renamed – BAD CALL MS.
It’s going to take me a very long time to relearn this OS and GUI. It just isn’t as intuitive as earlier versions of windows. Why move and/or rename features people have been using since the early 1990’s? It just doesn’t make sense.
