It’s cloudy out there

The economic downturn could be a boon to the folks who provide cloud computing, but first they’ll have to overcome one big hurdle:
More than half of IT managers don’t understand “the cloud.”
Those are the findings of a recent survey by Rackspace, a cloud hosting company known as Mosso in the U.S.
What’s suitable?
Until recently, the cloud’s been mostly of interest to developers, not those who run enterprise operations.
But with the push on to save money using pay-as-you go, contract-free IT resources, it could be attractive.
What’s important to know is what’s not suitable for the cloud:
- hosting large databases, or
- running customizable applications.
The cloud is, however, well suited to archiving large graphic images, Web hosting and delivering software as a service (SaaS) to users in small-to-mid-size businesses.
