Making passwords safer

To keep your organization’s data more secure, most IT folks know that frequently changing passwords is a good step toward the goal. But if users have to come up with new and memorable passwords often, their creative skills could be put to the test.
Give them these simple guidelines for safe passwords:
- Avoid using terms that a nefarious thief might be able to guess from personal items on your desk (TopGiantsFan or PoodleLover aren’t as secure as you might think.)
- Use different passwords for different log-ins. Sure it’s more work, but if your one and only password does get cracked, you’re putting a lot more info at risk, and
- Please, no Post-It notes with passwords stuck to the monitor.

Passwords are not secure, never have been, never will be.
The more rules you create to make them more secure (change them more often, requrire more characters, demand upper and lowercase and numerals), the less secure they become.
