Rumor mill spins about MacBook updates

Mac rumor-mongers are nearly beside themselves with the latest word on how the company plans to re-vamp its line of laptops.

Here’s a short compilation of what Mac watchers believe is coming when Apple re-works the mobile computer line:

  • Weight loss as the whole line gets thinner (MacAir envy perhaps?)
  • Glass trackpad that’s multi-touch and uses gestures.
  • One piece of aluminum body that’s environmentally friendly and much tougher than previously
  • They’ll likely have Intel Centrino 2 chips.
  • 16:9 screens will be a bit bigger
  • Macbook Air may get a 45 nm processor
  • Possible name changes.

Why the overhaul? According to a recent story by Arik Hesseldahl in BusinessWeek, MacBooks accounted for about 60% of 2007 Apple computer sales 2007. Despite selling “like crazy”, writes Hesseldahl, they haven’t gotten a serious redesign in several years.

The MacBook and MacBook Pro got updates in February ‘08, so they’re both about due for the type of rehab Apple usually gives notebooks every six months or so.
