Wikis and who’s using ‘em

Nobody ever said war was a great thing, but it’s been a big technology driver ever since the first caveman picked up a rock to bash an enemy over the head.

I guess you could say, we’ve come a long way from rock projectiles to precision bombs.

These days, the Defense Department’s getting a good tech workout with wars on two fronts — Afghanistan and Iraq. But even when other folks start fighting, the department has a chance to test out new tricks and tools.

Take wikis, for example. Ever wonder if wikis would be of any use to your organization?

Apparently, so did the U.S. Defense Department, which found out the answer during the Russia/Georgia conflict, when the Pentagon set up wikis to monitor the situation and coordinate response.

The joint chiefs used wikis on its classified networks during the crisis. They found that the tools streamlined coordination efforts and cut e-mail traffic in half during the crisis.
