Windows mobile gets face-lift

The words Windows and user-friendly aren’t often found in the same sentence, but some folks say the phrasing might just apply to a new Windows release — Windows Mobile 6.5.

The application used on a variety of smartphones is getting this face-lift as the market for these all-in-one gadgets booms its way through the economic recession.

Early reports are that the new user interface on Windows Mobile 6.5 is easier to use and more intuitive than past versions of the software. (Having used Windows Mobile briefly in the past, I have to confirm that the software couldn’t actually be less user-friendly. In a word, it was a horror.)

With Version 6.5, word from testers is that most items in the Windows Mobile interface are now large enough to be clicked with a finger on a touch screen rather than selected using a stylus or by pushing buttons to navigate through menus.

Whether or not this new version of Windows Mobile will be able to stave off the rising tide of business users who’ve convinced their IT mangers to support the iPhone is left to be seen.
